Common Mistakes

Designing with non-users

Recruiting "interested people" instead of actual practitioners produces beautiful but impractical solutions. Include people who do the work every day.

Facilitator influence

Placing your own sketches on the wall biases what participants create. Show less, prompt more: "What would make this work for you?"

Polishing before synthesis

Turning participant sketches into polished designs before analyzing the underlying ideas. Document raw concepts first; refine only after understanding the thinking.
