Common Mistakes

Going native

Spending too much time in the community can erode critical perspective. Schedule regular check-ins with colleagues outside the field to maintain analytical distance.

Confirmation bias in note-taking

Recording only observations that fit emerging theory. Actively document contradictory cases; anomalies often carry the most insight.

Under-documenting early phases

The richest patterns emerge first. Write copious field notes from day one; vague early notes cannot be reconstructed later.
