Common Mistakes

Over-interpreting observations

Watching behavior without asking "why" leads to incorrect conclusions about intent. Pair each observation with a brief in-situ question to validate assumptions.

Observer effect

Users behave differently when watched. Allow warm-up time at the start, explain your role clearly, and use unobtrusive recording where possible.

Cherry-picking interesting anomalies

Focusing on deviations without quantifying frequency misrepresents the pattern. Document how often each behavior occurs and distinguish routine from exceptional.
