Common Mistakes

Analyzing the wrong competitive set

Analyzing "note-taking apps" while missing actual competitors solving the same job in different ways (Slack for communication, Google Docs for collaboration). Define competitors by the job, not the product category.

Feature checklist thinking

Assuming that every feature a competitor has is worth building. Interview customers on which features actually matter before adding them to the roadmap.

Snapshot analysis outdated immediately

The competitive landscape shifts rapidly. Treat competitive analysis as an ongoing quarterly process, not a one-time study.
